This year, everyone seems to be heading off somewhere fun in the next few weeks. With that in mind, here are some tips to help keep your travel jewelry sensible and safe.

1. Bring versatile pieces that can be worn day-into-night, and even better if they can be worn more than one way.

2. If you are not heading to a special occasion, choose “basic” items to wear everywhere that are comfortable and classic.

3. Add something colorful or whimsical and not too valuable.

4. We recommend having a small “travel bag” for your jewelry to go with you, not in checked bags. Pack each piece in its own little plastic bag, and use tissue to cushion softer gems, and to keep chains from tangling. Bring a soft cotton or microfiber cloth, and wipe your jewelry clean before putting away at the end of the day.

JEWELRY CARE FOR SUMMER TRAVEL

Pool
  1. “Last on, first off” is a great rule you might have heard about pearls, but it goes pretty well for all your jewelry.
    • If you’re applying lotions, sprays or cosmetics, the very last thing to put on before you head out the door is your jewelry.
    • The reverse is true when you get back from your day and evening of R&R – remove your jewelry, wipe it down with that cloth you brought, and pack each piece in its own baggy, before you start taking off makeup etc.

  1. And about being down by the water
    • Most gems don’t do well in salt or chlorinated water, so avoid wearing your gemstones into either ocean or pool. Even pearls, which come from the ocean, are typically strung on silk, which water will cause to deteriorate over time.
    • Precious metals are relatively safe in salt water, but the chlorine in a pool may cause a chemical reaction that can weaken the metal over time.
    • So, if you want to head into the water, put your favorite jewelry into a pouch or soft bag that you carry with you – you’ll always have a safe place for it, and you won’t have to try to remember where you put it!
