March - Aqua or Blue Topaz
Aquamarine, the March birthstone, is the blue-green color of the sea, which is why legend says that it is the treasure of mermaids, who bestowed it upon sailors to protect them on their journeys. The blue variety of beryl, aquamarine is found in many places, but Brazil and Pakistan are two of the most important sources. While it is generally translucent, some of these gems, known as “milky aquamarine” are opaque. Aquamarine is often heated to permanently bring out the bluer tones in the stone. Blue topaz, with its watery hues, is a frequent alternative to aquamarine.
